Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement

Land Use Plan
Project Summary
Picture
Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement is creating a vision for the future by developing a Land Use Plan for the community. The future vision is set forth through a series of visual maps along with guidance and principles to ensure the vision is made possible.

Typically a Land Use Plan is created to show two main things:
  • What is happening on the land today
  • A vision for how land should be used in the future
What's Happening?

Community Survey
Whether you live on Settlement, or anywhere across the country....you can participate in the Land Use Plan process! Start telling us about your community:
  • What do you value?
  • What do you like about Paddle Prairie?
  • What do you want to see happen in Paddle Prairie?
  • How do you use the lands?

Community Feedback
The project team visited Paddle Prairie in early June, 2022. The visit included workshops with the community, the youth, Council, and Administration.  The workshops had high participation, members were eager to share, and everyone had great vision for how they see the land use plan impacting them and their ideas of the future of Paddle Prairie. Take a look at the feedback here.

About the Land Use Plan
Why do we need a Land Use Plan?
A Land Use Plan creates guidance for how the land can be used in different areas. The rules can specify that certain activities (land uses) are allowed in some areas, but not in other areas. This may be to protect sensitive environmental areas and traditional land uses or to ensure that certain activities (e.g. forestry, silviculture, energy) are kept separate or properly integrated with other activities (e.g. housing, recreation, commercial).

A Land Use Plan will provide our community with a strong foundation to support all components of our livelihoods, and will help us dedicate specific areas for traditional ways of life, future housing projects, potential retail opportunities, and many types of economic development.
Built on Your Feedback
The rules can be strict or can be simply suggestions for how to respect the land and what activities are appropriate. The rules will be created based on feedback from the Paddle Prairie community, guided by professional Planning expertise, and approved by Paddle Prairie Council.

What will the process look like?
Our Land Use Planning process will be led by an Indigenous-owned consulting company called ProACTIVE Planning. They specialize in Indigenous Land Use Planning and will be caring for our process the same way they would for their own communities.

Over the next 10 months, ProACTIVE will be engaging with the Paddle Prairie community, Council and Administration many times to gather stories, perspectives, and insights from our membership – and will use this information to determine the needs and desires of the community. From there, they will conduct a highly technical analysis of our land base to determine the best uses for specific areas. Once this is done, they will produce a Draft Land Use Plan that synthesizes the needs and desires of the community with the most suitable land areas. ProACTIVE will then return to our community to present this Draft for any additional feedback from our membership, Council and Administration. Shortly after this, we will be presented with our final Land Use Plan.

Identifying Economic Development Opportunities
The land use plan is a starting point to identify opportunities for individual and community success.

Economic development can be directly related to the land through activities such as agriculture, recreation, or opportunities to grow a business.

The project will focus on understanding out how the community wants to grow now and in the future - from education opportunities, individual workshops, or identifying programming that will lead to the success of members and the community as a whole.

STAY TUNED AS WE IDENTIFY THESE OPPORTUNITIES THROUGHOUT THE LAND USE PLANNING PROCESS AND HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED!

How Can I Get Involved?

The input of the community is critical to the success of our Land Use Plan! There are multiple ways you can participate in the process – some are in-person events, and some are online engagement opportunities. The team at ProACTIVE is excited to hear your vision for your community and to do what they can to make that vision a reality.

Is there a way I can share my ideas directly with a project representative?

Yes! Paddle Prairie will be hiring Land Use Plan Ambassadors to support the overall Land Use Plan process, but also to meet with community members where they’re at to have a Home Visit Interview with you. The interview process is an interactive way to get involved with the project, without needing to attend larger scale events. During the interview, the LUP Ambassador will provide you with a map and markers, and will have a set of questions to ask you regarding your vision for the community, areas for conservation, and economic development ideas. If you would like to meet outside of your home instead, our LUP Ambassador can accommodate your needs.

Would you like to sign up to have a project representative meet with you through the Home Visit Interview program? Please check back in "What's Happening?" soon.
